Education City Stadium opened in June 15th, 2020 and hosted its first official match on September 3rd, 2020, played in the 2020–21 Qatar Stars League season. It is one of the eight official FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ stadiums and has a capacity of 40,000 seats with 20 percent of its building materials identified as green. After the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ the stadium will retain 20,000 seats for university athletics, while the rest will be donated to countries requiring sporting infrastructure. Education City Stadium received three awards from the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD): a five-star rating in Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) Design & Build certification, Class A* rating in GSAS Construction Management, and GSAS Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio certification.
